Car Burglaries Happening in River Ridge Fairways that Most of You Are Not Even Aware Of
Due to the monitoring of an 8 camera video surveillance system in one cul-de-sac, a very devious sneak thief was caught on camera. The car burglaries captured on DVR took place on October 17 at 5:12 a.m. The police were called, a police officer took a report on the car burglaries and left with a DVD of the crime. This DVD will be viewed by the detectives who are working on a string of property-related crimes in this area, starting with the crimes that prompted the Crime Alert flier we all received in July. The details visible on the video might be enough to enable the detectives to identify the vehicle driven by the thief.
Modus Operandi of a Thief
The DVR video shows the thief’s methodology (modus operandi or m.o. to crime show fans) and it is quite insidious. The first thing you see on the video is a person walking through the cul-de-sac, looking in car windows. He then opens unlocked cars that have visible items of value. These he re-positions for later fast retrieval. He continues walking and is gone for 6 or 7 minutes. During this time he is probably walking through other cul-de-sacs. He then returns and parks his car at the corner. He runs to the cars he had scouted out earlier, grabs the items, runs back to his car and makes a speedy get-away.
Insidious Crimes
The insidious aspect of theses crimes is that they probably would have gone unnoticed for a while, were it not for the surveillance cameras. The thief isn’t breaking into the cars, he only takes one item from each car and he only has them in his possession when he runs to his car for his get-away. In the cul-de-sac where this particular burglary took place, the thief was illuminated by four motion-sensing security flood lights and seemed to be undeterred.
